It’s been said that music heals the soul. If you’ve ever gotten to know a musician, you’ve likely heard them express how happy it makes them when someone has a meaningful experience at one of their shows. But the healing doesn’t have to stop when the stage goes dark and the venue empties. Scores of musicians have found creative ways to make a difference in the lives of those dealing with health challenges. The members of Baltimore-based modern rock tribute band HFS are channeling their efforts into a super cool charity event which doesn’t even require them to lift a drumstick! But that’s not to say there won’t be sweat involved…
You see, when the guys in HFS (Brian, Marco, Dave & Vince) aren’t on stage, you’ll likely find them on a bike somewhere on a trail through the woods. They had been talking about doing a communal ride so it seemed natural to channel their love of cycling towards something positive that would benefit others.
If you grew up in the 70s or 80s, you may remember how popular Walk-a-thons were. Maybe you even participated in one! The HFS guys are bringing it back, with a slight twist - their 1st Annual Bike-a-thon for Cystic Fibrosis. From October 1-3, 2024, the 4 guys (plus fill-in drummer Shawn) will ride a portion of the 184 mile C&O Canal Towpath trail between Cumberland and Frederick, MD to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF).
Cystic Fibrosis is all too familiar to the HFS family. Marco’s children - Max and Penelope Riva were born with CF, a life-threatening disease that causes thick mucus to clog up the lungs and GI system. This mucus leads to people with CF having frequent lung infections and GI complications. Over the years, the CFF has used donations like yours to find the best new therapies and help support their development. Thanks to recent advancements, Max and Penelope are doing very well but we can not let our guard down. These new therapies make living with CF a little easier, but they are not a cure.
That’s where you come in. By sponsoring HFS your donations go directly to CFF so they can continue to advance their mission. You can choose to pledge a dollar amount per mile the boys ride (collectively) or you can donate a flat fee which is not dependent on mileage. Better yet, you can put your money where your spokes are and sign up to ride with the band! The more riders we have, the more sponsors we’ll get. We will not stop until CF stands for Cure Found.
Thank you for your support. You are truly making a difference in the lives of those living with CF.
