We are excited to celebrate the 12th anniversary of the inaugural South Boston Cystic Fibrosis Softball Tournament, which was founded by Charlie Tufts in 2013. This year’s event will take place on September 13th at Moakley Park in South Boston. The tournament will feature up to 20 competitive teams vying for the title, along with a bean bag toss competition, prizes, and other fun activities. We encourage you to bring your friends and family to join us at the park for an enjoyable day!
Charlie was a passionate advocate for the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) community, and his dedication led to the creation of the original CF Softball Tournament. Over time, this event has evolved into the CTCF (Charlie Tufts Cystic Fibrosis) Softball Tournament, honoring his legacy, his hard work, and his personal fight against CF. In just 11 years and 8 tournaments, we have raised over $500k for CF research. For updates and more details about this year’s tournament, follow @ctcfsoftballtournament on Instagram and join our Annual CF Softball Tournament group page on Facebook.
Charlie’s Message (2017):
"Dear Cystic Fibrosis Community Supporters,
Fundraising for a Cystic Fibrosis cure has been a part of my life since I was diagnosed at age two. My mother, Virginia, would walk me door to door in our Milton neighborhood, asking for support for the CF Foundation’s Great Strides Walkathon. Over the years, we built a strong network of friends and family, but after losing her to cancer in 2002, we also lost some of our momentum."
"In 2013, we decided to start a softball tournament fundraiser to rekindle the spirit my mother had instilled in us and to continue the fight for a cure. What started with just six teams and fewer than 100 people grew to 20 teams and over 500 people by 2016. Our proceeds grew from roughly $7k in year one to over $50k in 2016. For 2017, we set our sights on a $100k goal."
Picking Up Where Charlie Left Off:
In 2017, thanks to the incredible support from participants and donors, Charlie’s CF Softball Tournament surpassed the $100k goal, raising nearly $125k. In recognition of his efforts, the tournament received the 2017 Hope in Action Award at the 62nd Annual Massachusetts Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Dinner in February 2018. At that time, Charlie was on the waiting list for a lung transplant at Mass General Hospital, so his close friend and CF advocate, Nicole Corcoran, accepted the award on his behalf.
After Charlie’s transplant in 2018, and his brave battle with CF, we tragically lost him to CF complications in November 2020. In his honor, we have continued his work. The tournament returned in 2022, raising $80k, followed by $76,561 in 2023, and $83,925 in 2024. This year, our goal is to raise $100k in support of finding a cure.
