Sun Salutation, Surya Namaskar in Sanskrit, means Salute to the Sun. A sun salutation consists of yoga poses linked together in a flowing, moving sequence. Sun salutations are a way to find center, express gratitude and send energy out into the world. In October 2019, Trikafta was approved by FDA, a ground-breaking, highly effective drug, which treats the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis (CF). This drug literally alters how the proteins are being folded in the cells of people with CF - the first approved treatment that is effective for people 12 years and older with at least one F508del mutation. This accounts for 90% of the population with CF, including my little sister, Katie. I am immensely grateful, and my heart is overfilling with hope.
I’m feeling inspired to express my gratitude for this milestone by hosting a “65 Sun Salutations for Cystic Fibrosis” fundraiser yoga event at Empowered Spaces DATE TBD, from 10:30am-12pm. We will begin with a short meditation & some gentle movement to begin warming up the body, followed by a demonstration of 3 variations of Sun Salute A, making this event accessible to all bodies and all levels. Then you will be invited to practice 65 sun salutations (or as many as feels best for each person). There will be an opportunity to visit with other like-hearted individuals following the cooldown and savasana (resting pose).
Why 65? “65 Roses” is a term often used by young children with cystic fibrosis to pronounce the name of their disease. The rose is the ancient symbol of love, and 65 Roses has become the beautiful symbol of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
There are many ways to get involved with 65 Sun Salutations for Cystic Fibrosis:
•Click the Tickets button in the upper right hand corner, and then register to attend event on DATE TBD (limited to 21 people) by paying $65 OR committing to fundraise $65 by gathering pledges/donations from your network by March 30, 2020. (To help reduce the risk of cross-infection, we will be observing the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's policy, which recommends having only one person with CF in attendance at an indoor event.)
•Click the Tickets button in the upper right hand corner, and then fundraise without attending event to practice your sun salutations at home, and commit to gathering pledges/donations from your network
•Click the Donate button under the event title and then make a donation
Raising awareness is so important for funding continued research for cystic fibrosis because CF is an orphan disease, only affecting 30,000 people in the United States. I invite you to consider posting a facebook live or photo of your sun salutation at home, sharing your commitment to curing cystic fibrosis on social media. Please use the hashtag #sunsalutationsforCF.
100% raised from this fundraiser will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Though immense progress has been made, we will not stop running, riding, or sun saluting until CF stands for Cure Found. I thank you with all my heart for being a part of this journey.
